The media arts and sciences certificate program in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts focuses on the creative exploration of how new media is influencing culture, or rather the way people live, learn, create and communicate.
Pursuing the media arts and sciences certificate allows students to enhance their program of study with integrated, transdisciplinary training in creative processes and technical skills in new media with cultural applications.
The School of Arts, Media and Engineering educates the next generation of learners and empowers them with technofluency --- its development, application and implications. The school prepares students to be socially aware, critically thinking global citizens who strive to bring about positive change in a society that is increasingly shaped by new technologies.
The media arts and sciences certificate requires 18 credit hours, of which 12 are upper division.
A minimum grade of a "C" (2.00) and an overall GPA of 3.00 is required in all courses in the certificate program. Courses in the certificate program may not be used as part of a major. All upper-division certificate coursework must be taken at ASU.

Media Arts and Sciences Electives -- 12 credit hours
Students who earn a media arts and sciences certificate cannot earn a minor in media arts and sciences.
Prerequisite courses may be needed in order to complete the requirements of this certificate.

A student pursuing an undergraduate certificate must be enrolled as a degree-seeking student at ASU. Undergraduate certificates are not awarded prior to the award of an undergraduate degree. A student already holding an undergraduate degree may pursue an undergraduate certificate as a nondegree-seeking graduate student.
Students can advance their career options with a undergraduate certificate. The certificate in media arts and sciences helps students become more marketable to employers by adding this specialization to complement their major program of study. Media arts and sciences graduates go on to work in a variety of fields, including mobile app design, audio production and autonomous systems.
What are accelerated programs?
Accelerated programs allow students the opportunity to expedite the completion of their degree.
3 year programs
These programs allow students to fast-track their studies after admission and earn a bachelor's degree in three years or fewer while participating in the same high-quality educational experience of a 4-year option. Students should talk to their academic advisor to get started.
Accelerated master's
These programs allow students to accelerate their studies to earn a bachelor's plus a master's degree in as few as five years (for some programs).
Each program has requirements students must meet to be eligible for consideration. Acceptance to the graduate program requires a separate application. Students typically receive approval to pursue the accelerated master’s during the junior year of their bachelor's degree program. Interested students can learn about eligibility requirements and

What are concurrent programs?
Concurrent degrees allow students to pursue their own personal or professional interests, earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. To add a concurrent degree to your existing degree, work with your academic advisor.
What are joint programs?
Joint programs, or jointly conferred degrees, are offered by more than one college and provide opportunities for students to take advantage of the academic strengths of two academic units. Upon graduation, students are awarded one degree and one diploma conferred by two colleges.

Students pursuing concurrent degrees earn two distinct degrees and receive two diplomas. ASU offers students two ways to earn concurrent degrees: by choosing a predetermined combination or creating their own combination. Predetermined combinations have a single admissions application and one easy to follow major map. To add a concurrent degree to your existing degree, work with your academic advisor. Accelerated bachelor's plus master's degree programs are designed for high-achieving undergraduate students who want the opportunity to share undergraduate coursework with graduate coursework to accelerate completion of their master's degree. A rolling deadline means that applications will continue to be reviewed on a regular basis until the semester begins. International students should be mindful of visa deadlines to ensure there is time to produce necessary visa documents. Applicants are encouraged to complete and submit application materials as soon as possible for consideration.
A final deadline means that all applications and application materials must be received by Graduate Admissions by the deadline date. Applications that are incomplete may not be considered after the final deadline. Applications that are submitted past the final deadline may not be considered.
A priority deadline means that applications submitted and completed before the priority deadline will receive priority consideration. Applications submitted after the priority deadlines will be reviewed in the order in which they were completed and on a space available basis. An application is complete after all materials are received by Graduate Admissions.
This program may be eligible for an Optional Practical Training extension for up to 36 months. This OPT work authorization term may help international students gain skills and experience in the U.S.Those interested in an OPT extension should review ASU degrees that qualify for the STEM-OPT extension at ASU's International Students and Scholars Center website. The OPT extension only applies to students on an F-1 visa and does not apply to students completing the degree through ASU Online.
