Special Information
• This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at the Flagstaff Mountain campus with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.
• This position is posted as Director, Laboratory which is a working title. The NAU system title for this position is Director, Health Services.
Job Description
The Laboratory Director is responsible for the overall operation of the lab and the competency of all laboratory personnel. This position also functions as the Technical Consultant and is responsible for technical and scientific oversight of the laboratory as delineated under the COLA guidelines (Commission of Office Laboratory Accreditation).
Department Leadership and Personnel Supervision - 40%
• Directs and coordinates the daily activities of the CHS Laboratory.
• Hires competent testing personnel. Informs, trains, monitors competencies, and instructs employees of new work methods or procedures. Effectively delegates responsibilities to staff.
• Ensures the lab is in compliance through constant Quality Assurance checks. Assures compliance with CLIA/COLA regulations.
• Maintains policy/procedure manuals.
• Assures proper staffing and adjusts staffing as needed. Provides safe and adequate working environment.
• Develops and implements quality assessment systems for testing and ensures continued compliance with licensing requirements.
• Enrolls the laboratory in approved PT programs commensurate with services offered.
• Provides technical support and communicates with the clinicians concerning laboratory testing, such as changes, problems, new and pertinent information.
Operations Management - 30%
• Maintains procedure lists in electronic medical record.
• Accessioning and billing of charges.
• Assists with assignment of reference laboratory contract and other contracts, as necessary.
• Responsible for overseeing/monitoring departmental purchases, ensuring a sufficient inventory of materials and supplies.
• Maintains and procures reagents, qc and calibration materials for all analyzers.
Testing, QC, Maintenance - 15%
• Performs a full range of clinical laboratory tests and examination in all sections of the laboratory.
• Performs routine testing in the medical laboratory to provide data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease.
• Ensures validity and accuracy of the test results. Follows established laboratory procedures for specimen handling, processing, test analysis, and reporting.
• Maintains, adjusts, operates, troubleshoots and makes minor repairs to equipment.
Customer Service - 10%
• Greets patients, answers questions for both providers and patients.
• Answers and fields phone calls for both providers and patients.
Other - 5%
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Environment
Mainly works indoors. On-site potential exposure to contagious illness and bloodborne pathogens in daily activities. Physical demands include sitting, standing, bending and lifting of a minimum of 50 lbs on occasion. Potential exposure to hazardous chemicals found in outpatient Laboratories.
Minimum Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Medical Technology or a related science AND five years of experience as a Medical Technologist which includes three years of supervisory experience in non-waived testing.
• Certification/Licensure as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist or Clinical Laboratory Scientist.
• Must become a COLA designated Laboratory Director, if not already deemed so, by completing 20 CE credit hours in laboratory practice that cover laboratory director responsibilities within 6 months of hire.
Preferred Qualifications
• Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Medical Technology or a related science and two years of experience as a Medical Technologist which includes one year of supervisory experience in non-waived testing.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
• Knowledge of supervisory practices and principles.
• Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of medical laboratory work to comply with CLIA/COLA.
• Skill in prioritizing and coordinating section activities in relationship to departmental functions.
• Ability to effectively communicate.

Salary
Salary range begins at $102,983. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
FLSA Status
This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and therefore will not earn overtime or compensatory time for additional time worked.
