Special Information
• This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.
• Employees of Facility Services are considered essential staff and must report to work when the university is closed for emergencies. This position is required to participate is on-call, call back duties and snow removal, which can include days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Under established circumstances will respond to emergency dispatch calls within set timeframes Administrative or Campus Living buildings.
Job Description
Under the general direction of the Associate Director for Utility Services, the Commissioning and Controls Specialist, Senior will perform, oversee, or review the building commissioning, systems test and balance, and control system programming and maintenance on campus.
This position exists to aid and advise the Associate Director of Utility Services for Facility Services in fulfilling Facility Services' mission to the University by providing superior customer service to the Campus community, exercising fiscal responsibility, reporting on leading edge technology, practicing sustainable maintenance and operations methods, and supporting the trade shops to achieve optimal efficiency.
Retro Commissioning and Controls Programming - 50%
• Monitors and maintains all plant data acquisition, building management, and central control systems to verify proper operations.
• Review and propose control sequences and schedules.
• Note deviations from normal operating conditions, work with Facility Services personnel to determine corrective actions, and review the results.
• Assist with hiring and managing commissioning teams for review of programs, collecting data, testing, balancing and adjusting required for optimum operation of air and water systems.
• Analyze buildings and operations to determine the optimum utilization of HVAC, electrical, lighting and control systems.
• Assist outside contractors or other university staff to perform building energy audits to establish baselines, identify energy conservation measures, propose efficiency projects, and report on improvements.
• Review of new technology such as Fault Detection and Diagnostics and provide recommendations for implementation.
• Assist with and/or prepare applications for grants or rebates.
• Maintain effective communication with all customers across campus and foster a team relationship that allows for collaborative problem solving and process improvement.
Construction Related Commissioning or Controls - 25%
• Work with Planning, Design, and Construction staff to:
• Review project commissioning and controls scopes.
• Participate in subconsultant selection and pricing reviews.
• Review project commissioning and controls implementation.
• Review commissioning and inspection project documentation for closeout.
• Assist in reviewing construction plans and submittals.
Advance the Climate Action Plan - 20%
• Participate in Sustainability Action Plan management, review, implementation, and updates.
• Provide documentation for Facility Condition Assessments.
• Provide data to faculty/staff/or consultants.
• Assist with Revolving Fund management and project submission.
• Monitor and maintain Willow and other smart campus initiatives
Other - 5%
• Snow removal as needed.
• Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
• High school degree.
• 1-3 years of relevant experience.
• Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
• Possession of valid AZ driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
• 2 years of energy data analysis, OR
• Participation in a four-year Mechanical, Energy, Technology, Accounting, Data Analytics or other related degree program.
• Programming experience with Alerton or Niagara 4
• Experience working in higher education with an understanding of university facilities and the diverse needs of university customers.
• Knowledge and experience with pneumatic and digital control systems.
• Commissioning and/or controls certifications
• Certified Energy Manager.

• The ideal candidate will demonstrate excellent customer-service skills, possess and demonstrate strong communication skills, and exhibit a high-level of organizational and administrative capability.
• A cooperative collaborative nature along with the desire and ability to motivate coworkers is an essential trait of this position.
• The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships throughout the University and Flagstaff community.
• Basic knowledge of theory of HVAC operation and control.
• Ability to keep abreast of changes in technology, or in the application of existing technologies, as they pertain to energy efficiency or energy cost reduction.
• Ability to perform energy basic energy calculations.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills
• Ability to work independently and with competing priorities
Driving Requirement
Driving a vehicle on behalf of the university is anticipated to be a regular part of this position. Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy requires all employees who drive on university business become authorized by submitting Driver's license information for driving record monitoring, and completion of training appropriate to the level of driving performed. The law applies to all faculty, staff, and students who drive personal or university-owned motorized vehicles for any business purpose. This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Salary
Salary range begins at $51,085 Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
FLSA Status
This position is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). The incumbent is eligible for overtime pay or compensatory time according to University policy. Further, the employee must submit timesheets that accurately reflect all hours worked.
