The Trades/Maintenance Specialist, Plumber performs various trades and journey-level duties related to the installation, maintenance, operation and repair of journey-level plumbing systems, including fire prevention systems, heating, water, gas, drainage, sewer, service backflow and cross-connections control systems.

This is journey-level or full-performance work. Incumbents operate semi-independently within their assigned areas of responsibility under the technical leadership of lead personnel and/or the general supervision of the appropriate supervisor or manager. Completion of an approved apprenticeship program or equivalent educational course work is required.

The work schedule for this position may include:

* Working evenings and weekends
* Requires rotating on-call with 24 hour availability
* Local travel may be required

Duties andResponsibilities

* Perform installation, maintenance and repairs to College facilities and equipment, with focus on commercial plumbing systems, including backflow prevention testing and record keeping
* Operate equipment
* Inspect facilities, systems, and fixtures and provide periodic servicing
* Estimate time and materials for assigned area
* Maintain and clean equipment
* Perform heavy labor, such as moving equipment or furniture
* Operate College motor vehicles
* Follow applicable federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations
* Use safe work practices and procedures, to include proper lifting and carrying methods, and the proper use of hand and power equipment, tools and supplies
* Assist with inventory of supplies and equipment to ensure adequate stock and functionality are maintained
* Perform data entry input on the computerized maintenance management system
* Use computers and applicable software including facilities and maintenance software, word processing, databases, email and calendaring
* Prepare and maintain a variety of reports and records
* Provide effective customer service
* Respond to customer issues, pages and emergency calls for repair on a 24-hour basis, including being subject to callbacks and serving on a rotating on-call roster
* Communicate clearly both orally and in writing sufficient to receive and convey instructions to perform the duties of the job
* Demonstrate interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the college community and the general public
* Operate as part of a team, to include cross training with other operations and maintenance staff
* Performs other duties as assigned


* High School Diploma, or General Equivalency Degree and
* Completion of an approved vocational/apprenticeship program and
* Two years skilled-level trades experience for assignment in B21 or
* Three years journey-level trades experience for an assignment in a single skill for assignment in B22 or
* Four years journey-level trades experience in a single skill and demonstrate knowledge, skills, or abilities in another skill not associated with the primary skill for assignment at B23
* Successful candidates must meet minimum medical testing requirements, as determined in a physical examination prior to employment

* Candidates who possess similar minimum objective qualifications should describe in detail the education and work experience you regard as establishing the equivalency.

* Repair and maintenance of a broad range of commercial facility plumbing systems, including fire prevention systems, heating, water, gas, drainage, sewer and other plumbing systems, backflow, and cross-connect controls
* General installation, repair and maintenance of other structural and mechanical/electrical systems
* Applicable state, federal and local laws, codes and regulations
* Use of computers and applicable software applications
* Principles of estimating job materials and work hours
* Basic inventory and record keeping
* Safe work practices, to include safe lifting and carrying methods, and the proper use of hand and power equipment, tools, and supplies used in providing comprehensive facility maintenance
* Principles of effective customer service
* Operate College motor vehicles
* Use applicable tools and equipment
* Troubleshoot systems related to area of assignment
* Communicate clearly both orally and in writing


* Climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pulling, lift, grasp, feel, talk, hear, see and repetitive motions
* Exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of forces constantly to move objects
* Work around moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, and intense noise
